How to Prepare for a Botox Treatment

Injecting botox into your face is a great way to make it look smoother, fuller, and more attractive. Getting botox injections on a regular basis can prolong the youthful state of your face, staving off wrinkles and age lines.

Are you getting ready for your very first botox injection session? Not exactly sure of how to prepare for it? If so, you’re in the right place.

Here is how to prepare for a botox treatment.

Read Up on Botox

Regardless of what procedure you’re having done, you shouldn’t go into it without a wealth of knowledge about what it entails. That’s why, before you go in for your first Botox appointment, you need to read up on botox.

Read about its benefits. Read about the way that it’s administered. Read about any possible dangers it might cause.

While Botox is a primarily useful substance, it’s not without its downsides. A variety of potential side effects accompany botox, including pain, redness, drooping eyelids, and headaches.

By garnering information such as this, you can ensure that you’re absolutely certain about going through with the procedure.

Schedule Your Appointment at an Appropriate Time

Getting botox for the first time can be an anxiety-inducing and stressful experience. That’s why you need to plan your first Botox appointment strategically.

Ideally, you won’t schedule your appointment on a busy day. Instead, you’ll schedule it on a fairly laid back day which allows plenty of downtime both before it begins and after it ends.

Often times, it’s a good idea for new patients to schedule their first appointments in the morning. By doing so, you don’t have to endure a long, anxious wait. You can just get it out of the way as soon as possible.

Ask Your Doctor About Your Medications

The fact of the matter is that some medications don’t mix well with Botox. This is why, if you’re on medications, you need to discuss them with your doctor. In some cases, you’ll be advised to stay on them; in other cases, you’ll be advised to stop taking them for the time being.

Some medications which don’t go well with botox include aspirin, ibuprofen, blood thinners, muscle relaxers, and allergy meds. Generally, if you’re taking these medications, you’ll need to be off of them in the days leading up to, and the days following your appointment.

Take Measures to Limit Bruising

One of the common side effects of getting botox is bruising. Though bruising sometimes can’t be avoided, there are measures which can be carried out to limit its chances of occurring.

Do you smoke? If so, it’s highly recommended that you lay off the cigarettes in the days leading up to your appointment. Doing so will drastically reduce your chances of bruising.

In addition to laying off the cigarettes, you should also take some proactive measures. Apply Arnica cream in the few days before your appointment. This natural cream has been proven to reduce the effects of bruising.

Make sure to apply some ice as well. Placing an ice pack on your face before and after your appointment can keep swelling down, vastly reducing the amount of bruising that you experience.

Get Your Blood Pumping

A great way to prepare yourself physically and mentally for your appointment is by exercising. Jogging, walking, bike riding or other forms of cardio can help to get your blood pumping, psychologically readying you to face your injections.

Working out just prior to your appointment is ideal. If you can, you should avoid working out directly after your appointment. Working out within 5 hours of receiving botox shots can cause an increase in pain, swelling, and bruising.

Wash Your Skin Thoroughly

When you get botox shots, you need your face to be as clean as possible. If your face is greasy or oily when your shots are administered, they can cause an outbreak of acne.

While your doctor will likely wash your face with an antiseptic just prior to your injections, you’re still going to want to give your face a scrub-down yourself. You don’t need to use anything fancy. A simple mixture of soap and water will purify and cleanse your face, eliminating all chances of infection.

Relax Yourself

If you’re not nervous about having botox injected for the first time, there’s really not much to worry about. You can just stroll into your appointment, receive your shots, ice up, and carry on with the rest of your day.

However, many individuals feel a great deal of anxiety when going in for their first botox treatment. If you fit into this group of people, you need to do everything in your power to calm your nerves.

Practicing meditation, listening to music, and reading are all good ways to set your mind at ease, distracting you from the upcoming procedure. If your doctor allows it, you can even take an anti-anxiety medication.

Consult With Your Doctor

When you go in for your appointment, you will have the opportunity to speak with your doctor before receiving shots. During this discussion, you should bring up anything which might be bothering you.

Your doctor can provide you with knowledge-backed answers and can ensure that you’re totally comfortable with the procedure that you’re about to undergo.

Ready Yourself for Recovery

Though a botox treatment is by no means an extensive procedure, it can result in a bit of pain and discomfort. You should be ready to counteract this pain and discomfort the moment you leave your procedure.

Apply ice packs, refrain from smoking, resist rubbing your eyes, and stay away from exercise for about 5 hours after your procedure has ended.
